Chelsea are reportedly intensifying their efforts to sign Napoli forward Dries Mertens. The Belgium international is reportedly out of contract in the summer and Chelsea aim to bring the talented forward to Stamford Bridge.
According to Sky Italia, Mertens has been monitored all season by Chelsea and the Blues have met with Mertens representatives over a deal. With Mertens out of contract in the summer Chelsea would be able to sign him on a Bosman deal.
Blues boss Frank Lampard is a huge fan of the 32-year-old and sees him as an ideal option in the attack for next season. French forward Olivier Giroud is expected to leave in the summer and Chelsea want an experienced replacement for the World Cup winner.
Mertens offers a different approach than Giroud as he is more of a dynamic forward than a target man. However his goal record at Napoli shows how effective he can be in front of goal and he would bring that clinical edge to the Blues frontline.
This transfer is one that has been making the rounds in recent weeks and it appears that a deal could soon be agreed upon. Chelsea have already shown their commitment towards improving the attack with the acquisition of Ajax talisman Hakim Ziyech.
