Manchester United are said to be in talks with Lille defender, Gabriel Magalhães. The 22-year-old is still relatively inexperienced at the highest level – turning out just 39 times in Ligue 1 but has been linked with a number of clubs after impressing throughout the 2019/20 season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be keen on investing in another central defender preferably a left-footed player to pair with Harry Maguire and Gabriel’s strength of playing with his left foot is a preferred trait of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Although, the United defence is certainly an area that needs addressing according to some but Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho is seen as the main target.
United have jumped into the battle for the Brazilian youngster, who is believed to leave Lille Olympique Sporting Club this summer.
Magalhaes fits the kind of profile Solskjaer typically looks for in terms of his targets normally being upcoming stars with plenty of potentials.
Report from France says United have held negotiations with Gabriel’s representatives, though they are yet to make formal contact with Lille.
However, United will have to fight off interest from others if they ever hope to secure the Brazilian defender with reports emerging that Everton and Napoli are also monitoring his situation.
The 22-year-old is expected to be available for relatively cheap but if a bidding war begins, it could end up being a costly transfer.
Lille president Gerard Lopez is demanding around €30m to sell the defender, a figure which is more than affordable for United despite the loss of matchday revenue owing to the global coronavirus pandemic.
United may also be able to raise further funds if they can ship out the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling on permanent deals to Inter Milan, while the club may also look to move on Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo to reduce competition for places in defence.
